On the occasion of the Universal Day of Peace and Nonviolence on Sept. 21, as proclaimed by the United Nations.
- In following Jesus, Son of God, whom we recognize as our Sovereign Lord, we confirm our biblical and historical conviction that the road towards peace is active nonviolence and love for our fellow men, especially for the weak, marginalized ones, the poor and the enemies.
- We shall not be party to the proposal to arm in search of peace. We consider that the effort to obligate the entire population to take sides
in the armed conflict either of the state or the illegal groups, is a false alternative because both utilize the logic of weapons and violence.
- We are opposed to participate in armed groups and to pay those who do. We are opposed to the militarization of the economy; and plead for
all, the right to conscientious objection to all armed services.
- We believe that peace is everyone’s business. Therefore we shall follow to achieve peace with justice for all, advancing conversations and constructive actions with whatever group is willing to consider negotiated and nonviolent exits to the problematic extension of reconciliation of the country.
- We encourage the government, the armed groups and the communication media to lay aside their fighting attitudes and to embark instead in
conversations and actions of peace where substantial and basic concessions are made in the building of a new country with full guarantees for human dignity in the realm of social and legal justice which include housing, employment, property, security, education, health and democratic liberties.
- We call on the international community, and especially the citizens of the United States to apply the brakes to their financial contributions, weapons and advise in warfare to Colombia, as well as to contribute to the well being of the world in supporting and approving the participation in the International Criminal Court.
- We invite the movements of peace and nonviolence in Colombia to put aside their differences and to take a more pro- active stance for peace in our country.
- We also invite all those Colombians of good will to unite in the creation of a great movement of”A Million Craftspeople for Life, Nonviolence and Peace” by informing themselves by calling the tel. numbers 619-9331 and 287-2978, e-mail: millondeartesanos@sly.net.co Av.32#14-42, Bogota
- BREAD and PEACE. We invite all citizens to pray and to participate in an intentional (but not forced) fasting for peace on Saturday, Sept. 21; and to break the fast in an act of togetherness at 4 p.m. the same day on Plaza de Bolivar, by bringing a loaf of bread to share with others. Bread for all, no weapons! Bread for hunger, no bombs!
